Man suspected of firing rifle near East Oakland elementary school arrested

OAKLAND — A man suspected of firing rifle shots near an East Oakland elementary school Friday morning was arrested and the semi-automatic weapon recovered, police said.

No one was injured and there were no immediate reports of any vehicles or structures hit by gunfire.

The name of the 28-year-old man arrested was not immediately released. He lives on Bella Vista Avenue where some of the shots were fired,  authorities said

Police began receiving  reports about 6:06 a.m. Friday of a man armed with a rifle firing shots in the 1000 block of Bella Vista Avenue, not far from Bella Vista Elementary School, which is at 1025 East 28th St. The school was not open at the time.

Officers responded to the area and some reported hearing gunfire. Streets in the area were shut down while officers searched for the suspect.

The suspect was located by officers about 6:40 a.m.  about to go back into his residence. He was arrested and the rifle recovered, police said. Police are not sure why the man was firing the rifle or if he was under the influence of anything.

Authorities said he was arrested on suspicion of  negligent discharge of a firearm, negligent shooting near a school,  possession of a firearm not registered to him and carrying a loaded firearm in a public place and was going to taken to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation.
