SAN LORENZO — A 16-year-old was arrested in a high school classroom after a loaded 9mm Glock handgun was found in his backpack, authorities said.

At 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, a student tipped off staff at San Lorenzo High School that another student might have a gun, Alameda County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ray Kelly said.

Staff members then alerted the campus school resource officer, one of a dozen from the sheriff’s office. Soon after, officers were able to find and detain the student.

After a search of the student’s backpack yielded a stolen 9mm Glock handgun loaded with 12 rounds, the student was arrested on suspicion of possession of a loaded handgun and carrying a concealed weapon, Kelly said.

“We couldn’t be more proud of the student who came forward,” Kelly said. “This is exactly what we’re telling students to do, and with the incredible amount of concern over shootings, this is an example of it working right.”

The student, who was taken to Juvenile Hall, also will likely face school district administrative sanctions up to either suspension or expulsion.

“This is two times now where students who love and care about their schools came forward, and likely we averted some possible madness with a gun down the road,” Kelly said, recalling a March campus lockdown at San Lorenzo’s Arroyo High School that also led to a handgun recovery.

“These students, they’re not going to tolerate guns at their schools.”
