OAKLAND — A man suspected of kidnapping his elderly landlady Monday morning was arrested and the woman rescued after a police chase from Chinatown to East Oakland, authorities said.

Police said the 36-year-old suspect got into a dispute with the 71-year-old woman about 7:45 a.m. Monday at her residence in the 600 block of Oak Street. The man lives at another property owned by the woman and came over to her residence to confront her about something having to do with where he was living, authorities said.

Exactly what the dispute was about was not released.

Police said the suspect assaulted the woman’s 34-year-old son with a piece of metal before forcing her into his car and driving off with her.

Police were notified and officers saw the car as they were responding, Officer Johnna Watson said.

Police chased the car on city streets, then onto the eastbound lanes of Interstate 580, where the suspect exited at High Street and continued on city streets.

At one point before getting on the freeway, the suspect stopped his vehicle and backed into a police car that had been pursuing him before driving off again. The officer was not hurt.

The suspect finally stopped in the 3200 block of Lorenzo Avenue near Suter Street, where he was arrested and the woman rescued at 8:36 a.m., police said.

The suspect, whose name was not released, was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

No other details were released.
