OAKLAND — A man was killed Thursday night when his car plunged off an onramp to Interstate 880, then landed on the freeway and was hit by another vehicle, the California Highway Patrol said Friday.
The man’s name has not been released pending notification of family. He was alone in the vehicle, authorities said.
The CHP said the man was driving at an apparent high speed on the northbound entrance to I-880 from 98th Avenue when he lost control and his car fell down a 30-foot embankment, rolling over a few times before landing in the extreme right lane of the freeway.
CHP Officer Herman Baza said after the car came to rest it was hit from behind by another vehicle.
The driver, who Baza said was not wearing a seatbelt, was not ejected and was found inside the car, but not behind the steering wheel.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Baza said it is not believed at this time that alcohol or drugs were a factor.
Portions of the freeway were closed for several hours while the CHP investigated.
Anyone who may have witnessed what happened is asked to call the CHP at 510-450-3821.
