FREMONT — A Newark man was in county jail Monday after his arrest in connection with a hotel-room vandalism incident where he got into a fight with officers, authorities said.

At 1:11 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to a call at Best Western Plus Garden Court Inn, 5400 Mowry Avenue, for a report of a disturbance involving a guest who appeared under the influence, left blood visible on his room door and might have hurt himself, police said Monday.

When officers arrived, they met a naked, bloody man who began to fight them, and they summoned more officers for assistance after unsuccessful Taser use.

Those officers arrived to find the original officers amid piles of equipment and gear on the floor, struggling with the man, who was also screaming and biting while continuing to put up a fight, police said.

After some minutes, officers handcuffed the man, identified as Matthew Kelley, 36, and placed him in a spit hood and restraining device.

Kelley was arrested on suspicion of felony battery against a peace officer, vandalism and obstruction of an executive order, and was taken to a hospital for treatment before being booked into Santa Rita Jail late Sunday.

Several officers were exposed to his blood, and two officers were admitted to an emergency room before later release to full duty, police said.

He was held Monday night on $85,000 bail and faced a Tuesday hearing at East County Hall of Justice, according to county records.

Contact George Kelly at 408-859-5180.
