PLEASANTON — An 8-year-old girl who was rushed to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland after being found submerged at a community swimming pool over the weekend has died, authorities said.
The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office identified the girl as Ann Cai, of Pleasanton. They announced her death on social media early Wednesday.
A lifeguard found Cai in the community pool at Castlewood Country club on Saturday around 2:25 p.m.
“Our deepest condolences to her parents and family,” the Sheriff’s Office wrote on its Twitter page. “We will continue to support them through this difficult time.”

The lifeguard immediately pulled Ann out of the water and began life-saving measures, the Sheriff’s Office said. Responding firefighters and paramedics also joined the deputies and got a faint pulse.
An ambulance took her to a local hospital, and she later was transferred to Children’s Hospital, authorities said.
A Pleasanton Unified School District spokesman confirmed Ann was a student within the district but declined to reveal the school, citing the family’s desire for privacy.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic loss of a student, the district said in a statement released by spokesman Patrick Gannon. “The loss of a child is incredibly difficult and we want to ensure that our families and students know that support is available to them.”
Grief counselors will be available for students at the school, he said.
