FREMONT — Students at an elementary school sheltered in place Monday morning while officers searched for and finally caught a person with an active arrest warrant, police said.

The Fremont Unified School District reported at 10:27 a.m. that a shelter-in-place had been ordered at Mission San Jose Elementary School on Bryant Street. The suspect they sought fled from officers in the area of Jerome Avenue and Anza Street and jumped a couple of fences before hiding, police said.

Officers found him in a crawl space of a residence on Anza Street and arrested him about 11 a.m. Police lifted the shelter-in-place shortly thereafter.

A California Highway Patrol helicopter also participated in the search for the man. School security officers were en route during the shelter-in-place, and police said they have no reason to believe the man they were searching for ever made it to the school.
