OAKLAND — A driver who fled the scene in his car after hitting and killing a pedestrian in East Oakland Friday night is being sought by police.
Authorities have identified the man who died as Lester Charles Harris, 53.
The deadly collision happened about 8:09 p.m. Friday in the 2500 block of 73rd Avenue near the Eastmont police substation.
Police said Harris killed was walking westbound across 73rd Avenue in the southbound lanes of traffic outside of a crosswalk.
Some vehicles had stopped for him before he stumbled and fell into a traffic lane. As he began to stand up he fell again which is when he was hit by the car, described as an older model black Ford Thunderbird. He died at the scene.
The car continued on 73rd without stopping, police said. A description of the driver was not released.
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the driver. Anyone with information may call police at 510-777-8570 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
