OAKLAND — A fire at an East Oakland  home Thursday night apparently caused by overloaded extension cords connected together is a reminder of what can happen when such circumstances exist, officials said Friday.

Luckily the fire was contained to a front bedroom where it started and no one was injured, officials said.

The fire was reported about 7:14 p.m. Thursday at the home in the 1500 block of 90th Avenue.

The three residents inside at the time were alerted to the fire by a smoke detector and were able to get out before firefighters arrived, officials said.

Seventeen firefighters had the single-alarm fire under control at 7:27 p.m., fire Capt. Tracy Paganelli said.  Damage was confined to the contents of the bedroom, she said.

She said it is believed the fire started as a result of several extension cords used to power a lamp, heater and other items in the bedroom being connected together to a single outlet. Residents of any residence should be careful about overloading electrical outlets, especially as the holidays approach, she said.

The residents of the home were not displaced by the fire.
