HAYWARD — Firefighters have stopped forward progress on a small grass fire burning Wednesday in Garin Regional Park, authorities said.
Shortly after 2:45 p.m., smoke and flames were reported in the 34300 block of Palomares Road, east of Walpert Ridge and west-southwest of Sunol Ridge, according to firefighters with the Alameda County Fire Department.
Firefighters arrived on scene just after 3 and found a slow-moving fire of about one acre in light brush along the west side of Palomares. They sent a request to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection for a water tender and to Fremont fire and police for traffic control along Palomares.
East Bay Regional Park District firefighters also responded. CalFire’s Twitter account said the fire, dubbed the Niles Fire, was at 20 acres as of 4:50 p.m., and listed it at 30 percent containment by just before 5:30 p.m..
Officials have coordinated on a hard closure of Palomares at Niles Canyon Road to the south and Interstate 580 to the north, with drivers advised to use Interstates 880 or 680 instead.
No word was immediately available on a cause. There were no structures threatened.
