OAKLAND — A San Francisco man has been charged with murder and other counts in a double shooting in August that stemmed from a failed carjacking attempt in East Oakland, according to authorities and court records.
Ibrahim Saleh, 20, is charged with murder in the Aug. 26 killing of Esau Davis, 38, of Oakland in the 1300 block of 72nd Avenue. He is also charged with assault with a semi-automatic firearm in the shooting of a woman who was with Davis at the time and attempted carjacking.
According to court records Saleh has admitted his involvement in the shootings.
According to authorities and court records, Saleh and another person still being sought were driving in Saleh’s 2015 Honda Crosstour and were on 72nd Avenue about 7:07 p.m. Aug. 26 when they saw Davis and attempted to steal his Lexus.
Authorities said Saleh apparently did not know Davis before the shooting. But the attempted carjacking “went bad” and Davis and the woman were shot, the records state.
Saleh and the other person fled in the Honda. Sgt. Brad Baker said in court documents the Honda was identified through video surveillance and was linked to Saleh. His phone records also linked him to the scene of the shooting.
Baker said Saleh attempted to cover up his involvement in the killing by reporting the Honda license plates stolen. Saleh was arrested Oct. 17 in San Francisco. He was formally charged Oct. 22 and is being held without bail with a plea hearing scheduled for Dec. 7.
