State needs to return totwo-party governance
With the defeat of Assemblywoman Catharine Baker, it’s now official: There are no Republican elected officials representing any part of the Bay Area on either the federal or state level.
Many progressives are no doubt celebrating this. But one-party dominance is not a good situation. And it doesn’t matter which party dominates. It’s just as much a problem in red states dominated by the GOP as it is in blue states like California and cities dominated by the Democrats.
Having two rival parties often produces heated disagreement. But it also tends to help keep each side honest. Without this, history shows that the increasing concentration of power in the hands of one party leads to increasing corruption and oppression.
We desperately need to go back to respect for the two-party system. Better yet, we need to go back to the two parties actually working together where possible.
