OAKLAND — A goat is in custody after leading California Highway Patrol officers on a midday chase for more than an hour across lanes of Interstate 880, authorities said.
Just before 12:15 p.m., the CHP received a report of the animal running across the 23rd Avenue on-ramp to northbound I-880, and officers quickly responded, CHP Officer Herman Baza said.
When officers arrived, the goat headed toward a construction area in the center divide before crossing southbound lanes and heading onto city streets, Baza said.
“It ran into the Jingletown neighborhood, and we were trying to secure it. At one point, it ran into a shop and we cornered it but it ran away.”
Just before 2 p.m., the goat hid underneath a big-rig truck parked at Derby Avenue and Glascock Street, and officers managed to grab its horns and detain it.
After a Good Samaritan stopped in a car and gave the officers rope, the officers secured the goat and took it in a patrol vehicle to CHP Oakland headquarters on Telegraph Avenue.
“It seemed in good health, if a little shaken up. We petted it and got it relaxed, and it looked a little tired and dehydrated so we gave it water,” Baza said. “You don’t imagine that a goat will show up in Oakland. That’s what’s fun about this job. You never know.”
Baza said anyone who owns the goat is welcome to claim it at Oakland Animal Services.
The animal is not expected to face any charges.
