A motorcyclist who appears to have been splitting lanes died Sunday after crashing in the rain while riding on Interstate 580 between Livermore and Tracy, the California Highway Patrol said.
The 21-year-old man from Livermore died at the scene after his bike went down in the westbound direction around 1:05 p.m., CHP spokesman Officer Tyler Hahn said.
Original reports indicated he may have collided with an SUV that left the scene, but investigators have been unable to confirm that it happened, Hahn said.
The wreck happened about a mile west of the Grant Line Road exit, and ejected the man from the 2018 Harley Davidson and onto the freeway, where he was hit by a car, Hahn said. The driver who hit him after the initial crash stayed at the scene and cooperated, and it does not appear he did anything wrong.
Authorities did not identify the man early Monday, pending the notification of his relatives.
Speed may have been a factor in the crash along with the rainy conditions, Hahn said.
