U.S. governed by what’sright, not majority’s will
A recent letter-writer expressed that he’d sleep well “if anything happens to both 45 and the vice president” and Nancy Pelosi became president (“Have confidence in Pelosi if she became POTUS,” Jan. 8).
Aside from the reprehensible disrespect of someone who won’t even say President Trump and Vice President Pence’s names, I couldn’t help but wonder how much outrage we’d have seen if someone had written the same during Barack Obama’s presidency. (By the way, I never had trouble saying his name, despite disagreeing with him on most things.)
Another letter-writer the next day complained that if one person can shut down the government, then “we no longer live in a democracy” (“How can one person cause a shutdown?” Jan. 9). In case he missed, forgot or just wasn’t taught civics, we don’t live in a democracy. We live in democratic republic.
Our elected officials are supposed to represent us by doing what is right, not necessarily what the majority wants.
