Girls basketball rankings: Bay Area News Group Top 25

That No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown is now 1 vs. 3.

Two days before playing host to top-ranked Archbishop Mitty in an MLK matinee Monday, second-ranked Carondelet had its eight-game winning streak come to an end with a 59-47 loss to Folsom at the St. Mary’s-Stockton MLK Showcase.

That was enough for Bay Area News Group voters to drop the Cougars to No. 3 in this week’s Top 25, one spot behind Pinewood, whose one loss was at Carondelet two weeks ago.

Pinewood routed No. 11 Menlo 75-36 and No. 23 Woodside Priory 61-27 last week. Priory later lost to No. 7 O’Dowd by just three points.

Mitty scored 89 points in both of its wins last week, 89-53 over Sacred Heart Cathedral and 89-26 over St. Francis. Haley Jones had 31 points against SHC and 43 against St. Francis.

California made the biggest leap, from No. 16 to No. 9, with a 3-0 week that included a 94-90 overtime victory over then-No. 9 San Ramon Valley.

As always with our high school poll, first-place votes are worth 25 points, second-place 24, third-place 23 and down the line.

The voters are myself (Darren Sabedra), Phil Jensen, Curtis Pashelka, Vytas Mazeika and Mike Lefkow.
