OAKLAND — Eight people were displaced but no one was injured in a two-alarm apartment building fire Thursday night, officials said Friday.

The fire was reported at 10:48 p.m. Thursday at the two-story dwelling in the 600 block of East Eighth Street, not far from BART tracks.

Residents were able to get out on their own before firefighters arrived. Firefighters had the blaze under control at 11:28 p.m.

The Red Cross was providing assistance to the eight adults displaced, officials said.

Preliminary investigation indicated the fire was apparently started by carelessly discarded smoking materials on a deck area, officials said.

A damage estimate were not immediately available and officials were not sure when the displaced residents would be able to return to their apartments.

Check back for updates.
