A woman arrested in connection with a hit-and-run collision this month that left a 14-year-old bicyclist seriously injured is on probation after felony convictions last fall for driving under the influence and evading an officer
The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has charged Leah Conner, 36, of Oakland, after her arrest Saturday morning, according to county records.
Conner faces felony charges of assault with a deadly weapon, reckless driving, and leaving the scene of an accident, according to Alameda County court records.
No other suspects are being sought in the case, an Oakland Police Department spokesperson said Sunday.
According to probable-cause statements two Oakland police officers gave to the District Attorney’s Office on Friday, Conner was driving her car southbound in the 1100 block of 35th Avenue in Oakland on Jan. 2 when she struck the bicyclist, who rolled onto her hood before falling to the pavement.
She then pulled forward, trapping him under the car, and dragged him south along 35th Avenue, then east into an AC Transit bus terminal, south onto 33rd Avenue, east onto San Leandro Street and south onto 34th Avenue to the road’s dead end.
“Conner stopped briefly, backed up a few feet and then drove forward, dislodging the victim from under the car. She drove into a driveway and exited the vehicle with her passenger,” the statement reads in part. “Her passenger then backed the car up next to the victim as he lay in the street.”
Conner and her passenger looked at the victim before getting back in and driving away, the officers said, “failing to identify herself and failing to render aid and assistance as required by law.”
Police, firefighters and paramedics who were dispatched to the 900 block of 34th Avenue found the 14-year-old bicyclist suffering from broken bones and internal injuries and took him to a hospital in critical condition.
Police recovered the vehicle, a gold Honda, hours later in the 3600 block of San Leandro Street.
Conner, who faces arraignment Tuesday at Oakland’s Wiley Manuel courthouse, was on probation after a conviction Oct. 31 in Sonoma County for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs causing injury and evading an officer with willful disregard.
