HAYWARD — Boxers will battle in the ring and hope to advance to the California Golden Gloves State Championships during a tournament next weekend that will support a memorial fund for Natalie Corona, a Davis police officer killed in the line of duty in January.
Boxers age 18 and older will fight in as many as two bouts each during the three-day tournament at Hayward Adult School, 22100 Princeton St.
Fights will take place Feb. 8, with doors opening at 6 p.m. and with competition beginning at 7 p.m. Fights also will take place Feb. 9, when doors also will open at 6 p.m. and the competition will start at 7 p.m.
The event will wrap up Feb. 10, when the doors will open at 1 p.m. and fights will begin at 2 p.m.
Along with the Natalie Corona Memorial Fund, matches will benefit the nonprofit Alameda County Deputy Sheriffs’ Activities League, which is organizing the event with USA Boxing Northern California, the governing body for amateur boxing in Northern California.
Officially known as the USA Boxing NorCal California Golden Gloves Region 1 Qualifier, the tournament will provide an opportunity for boxers to advance to the state Golden Gloves State Championships, which will be held in Southern California in April.
The event also will feature food, entertainment and activities for kids. General admission is $15, and ringside seats are $25. Free admission for children age 5 and younger.
Founded in 2005, the nonprofit Alameda County Deputy Sheriffs’ Activities League has personnel from the sheriff’s office who work with local residents on programs to reduce crime and improve quality of life, including free boxing classes each week to 100 children and adults.
