Tesla will cut 81 more jobs at its Fremont plant, bringing the total layoffs this month at its main factory to 883.
The additional job cuts, revealed in an updated filing with California’s Employment Development Department dated March 1, mostly target service technicians and tech support specialists.
Another new filing shows the company is getting rid of four more positions in Lathrop, bringing the total cuts at that location to 141.
In late January, Tesla’s filings with the EDD detailed 1,017 job cuts in Fremont, Palo Alto and Lathrop. Those were part of previously announced layoffs that are expected to total more than 3,000, or 7 percent of the company’s workforce. Tesla’s annual report shows it had 48,817 full-time employees as of Dec. 31, 2018.
This round of job cuts begins March 20, and comes amid questions about even more layoffs after Chief Executive Elon Musk announced last week that Tesla is switching to online-only sales and closing its stores. Musk called the moves necessary to fulfill his promise of offering the Model 3 for $35,000.
Some Tesla stores appear to have closed already, including one on Van Ness Avenue in San Francisco, where calls were being routed to Tesla headquarters Tuesday. Elsewhere in the Bay Area, stores in San Jose, Walnut Creek and Corte Madera were still open.
A Tesla spokeswoman said Tuesday the company would have no comment about the store closings. Shares in the company, which fell sharply last week after news about the closings, were down more than 2 percent to $279.10 Tuesday.
