Unnecessary, expensive, riskymedical tests now routine?

I was told today that Oakland’s Carol Ann Reed Breast Center, run by Sutter Health, will not schedule a breast ultrasound without also doing a mammogram, even if the doctor orders an ultrasound only.

A few years ago, I worked near Sonora and the orthopedic group I sent patients to for knee problems would not see a patient unless they had both an X-ray and an MRI of the knee.

Patients are thus being subjected to unnecessary, expensive and potentially dangerous studies as a matter of policy.
