ASHLAND — Investigators were working the scene of a shooting by sheriff’s deputies that left one suspect dead and another receiving treatment at a local hospital, authorities said Wednesday.

According to a tweet from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting involved an exchange of gunfire with suspects in a crime shortly before 4:40 p.m. near 162nd Avenue and East 14th Street in unincorporated Alameda County.

Around 6:45 p.m., sheriff’s spokesman J.D. Nelson said that deputies had responded to reports of a theft in progress at Thrift Town, 16160 East 14th Street.

When deputies arrived, they made contact with two suspects in a parking lot, but the suspects got into a dark-colored sport-utility vehicle, reversing it at high speed toward a deputy’s patrol motorcycle.

Three deputies opened fire with their service firearms, hitting the vehicle, Nelson said.

A male suspect in the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene. A female suspect inside the SUV was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley. No word on her condition was immediately available. A dog found inside the SUV was unhurt.

California Highway Patrol officers also responded to the scene to assist with traffic while investigators canvassed the scene for casings and interviewed deputies for statements.

The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office will conduct a separate and parallel investigation into the shooting incident, Nelson said.

Anyone with information should call the sheriff’s office at 510-667-3600.
