SAN LEANDRO — The Alameda County district attorney’s office charged a 30-year-old man on probation after a loaded subcompact assault rifle was found in his vehicle, authorities said.
In a statement, San Leandro police responded Monday to a downtown paint store for a report of a customer trying to use a fraudulent credit card.
When officers arrived, they contacted the customer and her friend, Oakland resident Daniel Lamar. After officers learned Lamar was on probation for the previous violation, they searched his vehicle and found the assault rifle, which had a high-capacity magazine loaded with 39 rounds.
“The weapon that was located by our officers is capable of causing serious harm,” San Leandro police Lt. Isaac Benabou said.

“This is a weapon designed for war, but yet found in the possession of a convicted felon in our community. Thankfully it has been taken out of the hands of a dangerous individual.”
Lamar, who police said has criminal histories in Alameda, Stanislaus, Sacramento and Los Angeles counties, was charged with three felony crimes and a misdemeanor crime, police said.
He was held at Santa Rita Jail and due to appear in court Wednesday.
Lamar’s friend was not arrested after the business declined to press charges, police said.
