Northbound Interstate 238, the primary connector ramp from Interstate 580 to Interstate 880, has reopened as of 4:50 p.m. Thursday, more than 16 hours after an early morning crash between a big rig and another vehicle, the agency said. The crash happened around 1:45 a.m. Nobody was injured.

A Sig-alert for severe traffic came at 2:55 a.m., then was cancelled at 4:45 a.m. But the California Department of Transportation determined the connector needed to be closed for further clean-up and to get the big rig removed, and the CHP reissued the alert at 10:30 a.m. and canceled it for good shortly before 4:50 p.m.

Traffic remained heavy between the alerts, backing up on northbound I-880 and westbound I-238 into Castro Valley, the CHP said. Detours were in place.

Big rigs had been instructed that they could use westbound I-580 through downtown Oakland during the alert. Normally, big rigs must steer clear of that area of I-580.
