UNION CITY — An Amtrak train bound for Los Angeles hit and killed a person early Wednesday, officials said.

The unidentified person died when train Amtrak Coast Starlight No. 11 passed through on tracks at Alvarado Boulevard around 8:19 a.m., Amtrak spokeswoman Beth Toll said. The train had departed from Seattle with 105 passengers and crew.

Nobody on the train was injured.

The Alameda County Coroner’s Office did not release the person’s identity or gender immediately.

The crash did not cause any additional delays to the Amtrak system.

Investigators do not yet know why the person was on the tracks.

Amtrak said about 2,000 people nationwide are killed or injured per year in grade crossing and trespassing incidents.
