OAKLAND — Vandals broke windows, damaged computers and destroyed a hallway at a dual elementary school campus, a school district official said.

“It’s a mess,” Oakland Unified School District spokesman John Sasaki said. “Whoever did this destroyed a bunch of things and did a lot of damage.”

The vandalism happened at the campus that houses Manzanita Community School and Manzanita Seed. One of the schools is bilingual. Both K-5 schools are located at 2409 E. 27th Street.

Police were still trying to determine when the vandalism happened. The school remained open on Tuesday.

“Some of the paint that was used was still wet,” Sasaki said.

According to Sasaki, the vandals broke at least 11 windows and dumped and spread paint normally used for art projects by students onto walls.

Sasaki said the vandals also broke some computers and “may have stole some.”

The classes were left mostly untouched, he said. That allowed the school to operate normally Tuesday.

A GoFundMe fund-raising account was established late Tuesday to help the school and its programs replenish destroyed and damaged supplies at https://www.gofundme.com/manzanita-seed,

Police did not say immediately whether there were any suspects. Anyone with information can call Oakland police at 510-238-3455.
