SAN MATEO — Authorities arrested a pair of suspected auto burglars early Wednesday morning following a dramatic car chase through the streets of San Mateo into Belmont.

Officers initially encountered the suspects near Palm and 17th avenues, an area that recently saw an uptick in auto burglaries, around 12:40 a.m., according to San Mateo police.

Police said a black Toyota Camry with no license plates was driving with its lights off and a man on foot was looking into parked cars. The man then got into the Toyota.

Officers tried to stop the car but the driver did not pull over and led them on a pursuit, according to police. The chase ended on the 700 block of Industrial Road in Belmont when officers used spike strips to flatten the car’s tires.

Police said a record check revealed the Toyota was stolen. A search of the car also turned up multiple burglary tools, drugs and possible stolen property, according to police.

The occupants of the Toyota — identified as 27-year-old Addison Mazagodoy and 28-year-old Javier Becerraramirez, both of Oakland — were arrested and booked into San Mateo County jail on charges of conspiracy to commit a crime, attempted auto theft and possession of burglary tools.

Mazagodoy was also booked for felony warrants and on charges of evading police, vehicle theft and possession of a stolen vehicle.
