Letter: Public trust tested by plan to shift Dumbarton Bridge funds to the East-West Connector in Union City

Regarding Alameda County’s proposed shift of Dumbarton Bridge funds to the East-West Connector in Union City (“A detour for transit hub?” Page A1, Feb. 27), it should be emphasized that this is a matter of accountability and public trust.

Each transportation measure contains a list of projects to be funded by the measure. The public takes these lists as a commitment that the funds raised will be allocated to the projects listed. Shifting funds from a transit project to a highway project seems disingenuous. And this is the second time Alameda County has shifted funds away from the Dumbarton Corridor.

If the East-West Connector was a priority project, why is it not on the Regional Measure 3 list? Will the projects listed in Regional Measure 3 actually be built, or will funds for them be shifted to other projects?

Accountability and trust need to be foremost.
