Schaaf brave to protect
refugees seeking shelter
Thanks to Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf’s brave warning to immigrants, a child went to school with slightly less fear that his parents would be gone would he got home. A pediatric nurse arrived at her job on time and a roofer completed a project. She is doing her job — to protect Oakland’s families — with courage and grace. Brave people once harbored Jews, too, when the Nazis initiated similar roundups.
Schaaf restores confidence in public leadership when bigotry emanates from the White House and ICE exudes ugly arrogance. (Only half of the 150 detained during the sweep had criminal records.)
Is it so wrong for a refugee to seek shelter from violence; work to feed, support and educate a family; and find in this country the promise that drew our ancestors here?
