SAN LEANDRO — Two men were arrested Monday after a 67-year-old woman was robbed of her purse, police said. The pair fled police in a vehicle, then crashed after police cut off the chase, officials said.

A little before 6 p.m., the woman had just left the Chase Bank near Dolores Avenue and East 14th Street when her purse was stolen.

According to police, Mister Simmons, 24, of Oakland, snatched the purse from the woman, then ran to an idling vehicle driven by Tyrone King, 21, of Oakland.

Police said that after they were flagged down, they located the vehicle and gave chase. Police broke off the pursuit once speeds reached dangerous levels.

The drivers did not slow down, however, and eventually crashed into a fence near Durant and Stratford avenues. No one was injured.

Police said both fled the scene of the crash; King was arrested one block away, and Simmons was found hiding in a nearby church.

The woman’s purse was returned to her. Simmons and King were charged Wednesday with robbery and felony evasion.
