BERKELEY — A baby with the umbilical cord still attached was found dead on the shoreline near a sports complex Tuesday afternoon, police said.
A person walking along the water just west of the Tom Bates Regional Sports Complex found the baby and contacted police around 2:40 p.m., police said. The complex is located in the 400 block of Gilman Street between West Frontage Road and the San Francisco Bay.
Police believe the fetus washed up on the shore, and a statement said it was “fairly well developed with the umbilical cord still attached.”
The Alameda County Coroner’s Office is investigating the death, and Berkeley police are reaching out to nearby agencies to assist. A deputy for the agency said an autopsy on the baby is scheduled for later Wednesday.
