State school districts’ F
grade cause for protest
EdSource reported in East Bay Times (“Science standards hit obstacles,” Page B1, March 18), that Next Generation Science Standards adopted in 2013 hit obstacles according the results of Public Policy Institute of California survey of 204 school districts across California at the end of 2016-17 school year.
According to that report, 22 percent of school districts have yet to start implementing those standards. Further, 91 percent school districts are reported to be either very familiar or somewhat familiar with the standards overall. Although it’s not reported how many are very familiar with the standards, it seems that it could be less than 50 percent of the 204 school districts are in “very familiar” category.
The reasons given for this lackluster progress are teacher shortages, inadequate labs and lack of materials.
Who is accountable for return on taxes paid by taxpayers for education? Where are the protesters to hold the school districts accountable for this F grade performance?
