OAKLAND — A man was arrested after a West Oakland stabbing Thursday that left another man in critical condition, authorities said Friday.

The stabbing happened about 3:07 p.m. Thursday near a homeless encampment in the 600 block of Sixth Street where the two men used to live, authorities said.

A police sergeant driving in the area saw the two men in an altercation. The sergeant found a 35-year-old man bleeding from multiple stab wounds and saw the suspect, a 29-year-old man, fleeing the scene on a bicycle.

The suspect was arrested a few blocks away by other officers, and the knife used in the stabbing was recovered, police said.

Police said the two men knew each other and might have been arguing over a bicycle, although it was not clear if it was the one the suspect fled on.

The suspect, whose name was not released pending a review of the case by the district attorney, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

Check back for updates.
