Federal government poised to create greater hunger in Bay Area
Re: “Trump food stamp cuts rooted in racist stereotypes” (Opinion, April 24):
The federally funded Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly the Food Stamp Program) helps feed over 40 million low-income Americans, including most of the 5,000 island residents served by the Alameda Food Bank.
Changes currently being considered in the 2018 Farm Bill by the U.S. House of Representatives would push large numbers of working families off SNAP and impose stricter rules that would subject millions more to harsh eligibility cutoffs. Although the Alameda Food Bank receives very little federal, state or city funding and would not be directly affected, these cuts would create an even greater need in our community, further stretching our limited resources.
Please let U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee know that you support her efforts to save SNAP.
