FREMONT — A San Leandro man was in custody Monday after being arrested in connection with an attempted residential burglary where he managed to pull a K-9 inside a house, authorities said.
Just before 1:45 p.m., dispatchers took a call from a landscaper working in the 4400 block of Faulkner Drive in the Glenmoor neighborhood.
The landscaper said he saw a suspicious person in a neighboring house’s backyard banging on and looking into windows before breaking a rear bedroom window to get inside, police said. The landscaper then walked to the house’s front and spoke with a resident, who called 911.
Officers responded to the house within two minutes, then posted up at positions outside, apparently surprising the suspect when he tried to exit a rear door about 1:55, police said.
The suspect retreated inside after seeing police, then tried to exit the front door but retreated again after seeing officers nearby.
After trying the back door again, he retreated but left it ajar, and officers released a K-9 to try to enter the house to capture the suspect. When the K-9 got to him, he was able to drag it inside and close the back door.
The suspect then appeared at the back door twice with a dark object in his hand, but an officer who was close enough saw it was not a firearm, and alerted other officers.
Fifteen minutes, after officers’ commands to surrender and attempts to negotiate, the suspect gave up and came outside. The K-9 was unharmed.
The suspect, identified as Robert Lomack, 23, of San Leandro, was taken to an area hospital for treatment of a dog bite. Officers said they plan to book Lomack on suspicion of residential burglary and resisting arrest, as well as for an active no-bail felony warrant from a December 2016 Fremont burglary.
