EMERYVILLE — Three people were arrested Tuesday on suspicion of auto burglary, authorities said.

Uniform and plainclothes officers conducting an anti-burglary sweep at several locations were patrolling the parking lot outside Chevy’s, 1890 Powell St., when they saw a silver 2001 Ford Focus with several people inside, police said.

Officers said they saw a man get out of the Ford and break another vehicle’s window before taking property from inside. The man then got back into the Ford, which drove away.

Soon after, officers stopped the Ford about half a mile away at Point Emery, and were able to confirm property inside belonged to the owner of the broken-into vehicle.

Adrian Benton, 19, Kailyn Daniels, 21, and Devante Giles, 22, were arrested on suspicion of vehicle burglary, possession of burglary tools and possession of stolen property. Officers later learned that Daniels, who was on probation, had an active warrant for her arrest.

All were in custody Tuesday evening at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, and they face arraignment hearings Wednesday at Oakland’s Wiley Manuel courthouse, according to county records.

“Most of these break-ins are crimes of opportunity, so it’s very rare we’re able to catch someone just like this,” Emeryville police Capt. Oliver Collins said. “We’ve reached out to other agencies to see what we hear about similar cases with these suspects.”

Collins urged visitors and residents to stow personal items and valuables out of sight, and avoid either purposeful or inadvertent displays.
