OAKLAND — The trial of a man, who police found hiding in a dumpster when he allegedly tried to run from them, began this week for the alleged molestation of a 6-year-old family member.
Jorge Ramos, 28, allegedly tried to escape from Oakland police July 9, 2016, around 3:30 p.m. He’s charged with five counts including two counts of sex or or sodomy with a child under the age of 10, continuous sex abuse and evading a police officer.
The abuse allegedly began on the victim when she was about 6 or 7 years old, according to court documents. He then began having sex with her but stopped when she turned 9, because she began menstruating, a probable cause declaration states. Other sex abuse allegedly continued until February 2015.
During his trial Thursday, Oakland police officers described how Ramos led them on a chase in his red Mazda. Police found the car abandoned and then another officer allegedly spotted him running across Interstate 880, toward Oakport Street, around 3:30 a.m. There were not many cars on the freeway at the time.
Officers eventually found him hiding in a dumpster in the area. A police body camera video shown to the jury by prosecutor Pete McGuiness showed Ramos getting out of the garbage pile with the help of an officer, and then being handcuffed on the ground.
Another woman testified that she lived with the young “Jane Doe” victim for several years in various places throughout Oakland. The woman was the one who eventually called police on Ramos, after she learned about the alleged abuse.
Ramos’ trial is expected to continue on Monday.
