NFL players at the top of their game are giving back to their Oakland community.
Oakland Raiders’ Marshawn Lynch, his NFL free-agent cousin and former Raiders quarterback Josh Johnson and Los Angeles Rams Marcus Peters spoke during the CourseCon: Oakland, Understanding the Community anti-violence summit at the Impact Hub in Oakland on June 6. The three athletes grew up on the tough streets of Oakland and have done a lot for local youth.
Former Olympic sprinter John Carlos, of New York, famed for his black-power podium salute with fellow sprinter Tommie Smith during the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, also spoke during the event.
Civic leaders, residents and police all took part in the moderated forum, sponsored by Bishop Omar Jahwar of Urban Specialists in Dallas. Jahwar has brought the program to a number of cities which are also plagued by violence.
