Climate lawsuits makeconversation combative
Re: “Oakland, SF should drop climate change lawsuits” (Opinion section, June 8):
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton makes some valid points around the current fight against climate change.
Recent climate lawsuits against oil companies may have their heart in the right place, but they end up making the climate conversation more combative than collaborative.
The most potent point in the piece was the fact that while cigarettes are non-essential, fossil fuels still provide a majority of the world’s power and fuel. Renewable energy sources are quickly gaining steam, but they still have a long way to go.
Climate change is the most pressing issue of our day, and we must all work together to solve it. Pointing fingers at oil companies does not move the conversation forward. Instead, we should be focusing on bipartisan, market-based solutions that everyone can agree on. One such option is a revenue-neutral carbon tax, which encourages emissions reduction without sacrificing economic growth.
Let’s act together before it’s too late.
