‘Invisible Kid’ matters, andhe can do difficult things

Re: “The Invisible Kid: How did he do it?” (Page A1, Sept. 2):

This is what his walk tells us about Jackson Kirby: He is resourceful, observant, smart and brave; he can do difficult things, and he matters to others.

I hope he doesn’t learn not to take initiative to solve his problems, or that he is unsafe away from his family. Please let us not catastrophize what turned out to be a risky but uneventful walk home. Children can be more resilient and capable than we expect; and while dangers are real, most of the time we pass through safely.

Most of us solve problems the hard way before we find easier solutions. Jackson could have solved his problem by asking someone at the school for help. Maybe this is the thing we all can learn about Jackson’s walk: There are people who can help us if we remember to look for them.
