SAN FRANCISCO — Federal prosecutors have charged a man with robbing five banks in Alameda and San Mateo Counties.

Mark Evans Reed, 57, is accused of robbing five banks within two months, from late May to the third week of July. The banks were located in Fremont, Alameda, Castro Valley, and Burlingame.

In every instance, the banks robbed were U.S. Banks, according to court records. Prosecutors say Reed’s take varied from robbery to robbery; on one, he allegedly came away with around $2,000. On the first robbery, in Fremont, he allegedly came away with only $390.

Prosecutors also filed an asset forfeiture petition to seize illegally-gained funds from Reed.

The charges carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, according to court records.

Reed pleaded not guilty to the charges at his first court hearing Sept. 13. He remains in federal custody, and is scheduled to have a detention hearing on Tuesday, court records show.
