OAKLAND — A man who shot at a police officer in East Oakland early Friday was able to elude capture and is still being sought, authorities said.
The officer was not hurt and did not shoot at the suspect, police said.
The shooting happened about 3:17 a.m. Friday in the 2300 block of East 17th Street.
The officer, who was in full uniform and driving a marked police vehicle, was investigating suspicious activity in the area and when he tried to stop the man, the man fled on foot, police said.
The officer starting chasing the man on foot and during the pursuit the man fired a shot at the officer but did not hit him. The suspect continued to run.
The officer radioed for assistance, bringing scores of police and Alameda County sheriff’s deputies to the area to search for the suspect.
Streets were shut down while officers conducted their search. During the search the suspect’s gun was recovered but about 7:30 a.m. the search for him was called off and streets reopened.
No description of the suspect has been released yet.
Police spokeswoman Officer Felicia Aisthorpe said even thought the suspect could not be located during the search, the investigation is continuing.
