OAKLAND — A man killed Saturday morning when the car he was driving was hit by an Amtrak train in East Oakland was identified by the coroner’s office Monday as Pablo Mancia-Guardado, 46.
Mancia-Guardado, an Oakland resident, was in a relative’s car trying to drive around the crossing gates when it was hit by the train about 10:20 a.m. Saturday at the 50th Avenue track crossing, authorities said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said Mancia-Guardado was driving south on 50th Avenue and that the railroad crossing gates were down and its warning lights flashing.
A car in front of him drove around the gates after a train going in one direction passed by but when he tried to drive around as well his car was struck by another train going 57 mph in the opposite direction, authorities said.
That was Amtrak Capitol Corridor train 732 headed toward downtown Oakland and eventually Sacramento. The train suffered some damage to its lead car since a locomotive was pushing the train, but none of the 71 passengers or crew members on board were injured, officials said.
Passengers were transferred to another train to continue their trip.
