OAKLAND — A dozen people were displaced and a dog died after fire erupted in a three-story East Oakland apartment building Saturday morning, fire officials said.
Firefighters responding at 10:48 a.m. to the building in the 5400 block of Bancroft Avenue found fire and heavy smoke in a first-floor unit, said Oakland Fire Department battalion chief Chris Landry.
The blaze was contained within 15 minutes of the arrival of firefighters, who kept it from spreading to other apartments, but five other units in the building, near Cole Street, sustained smoke damage, Landry said. No injuries to anyone in the building or to firefighters were reported.
No information on the extent of the damage was immediately available. The cause has not been determined.
