Sacramento should acceptfacts about high-speed rail
Re: “Brown, HSR Authority lied to taxpayers since day one” (Page A8, Nov. 30):
High-Speed Rail is a financial train wreck in the making. Your editorial of Nov. 30 outlining the initial grossly under-estimated construction costs and the current cost overruns is spot on.
However, that description of the financial disaster didn’t even include reasonable estimates of projected fare revenues compared to the associated operating costs, which will make the financial picture even worse. California taxpayers will be burdened with this disaster for many, many years to come.
A Supreme Court justice, in voting to overturn a legal precedent, once wrote, “Too often wisdom never comes, so one ought not to reject it merely because it comes late.” The governor and/or the Legislature should not reject the ample evidence that California high-speed rail is, or is obviously becoming, a boondoggle.
