The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has charged a 28-year-old man arrested this week after injuring an Oakland police officer and damaging her motorcycle while fleeing a traffic stop, according to authorities and court documents.

Just before 11:10 a.m. Tuesday, an Oakland traffic officer saw a black Chevy Equinox sport-utility vehicle driving at high speed fail to stop at a stop sign.

The officer stopped the vehicle in the 2400 block of Havenscourt Boulevard near Avenal Avenue.

When the officer walked over to the Chevy, she explained the reason for the stop and asked for identification. Suddenly, the driver threw the Chevy in reverse, hitting the officer’s ankle before striking the motorcycle, pushing it about ten to fifteen feet and severely damaging it.

The Chevy then fled at high speed. The officer was able to alert dispatchers about the incident.

The officer was listed later in stable condition at a hospital.

Investigators soon developed information about a suspect, and obtained a warrant for his arrest. Around 4:50 p.m. Tuesday, Oakland and San Leandro police found the man, identified as Clayton Freeman, on Hays Street in San Leandro.

Officers arrested Freeman on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and evading a peace officer with disregard to safety, as well as a probation violation.

Freeman faces probation revocation and has a pretrial hearing scheduled for April 4 in Oakland’s Wiley Manuel courthouse, according to a county records check Thursday night.
