The Stephen Sondheim’s musical “Company” made a splash when it debuted in 1970 with its fragmented structure of vignettes about love and marriage.

Nowadays it mostly seems like a very 1970s musical, focusing on a swinging single guy named Bobby whose friends are mostly married couples. Now turning 35, Bobby is dating several women and talking about wanting to settle down without displaying any serious intention of doing so.

With a book by George Furth, “Company” spawned memorable Sondheim numbers such as “Not Getting Married,” “Another Hundred People” and “The Ladies Who Lunch.”

“Company” opens March 29 at Alameda’s Altarena Playhouse, and is awash in renewed popularity after a 2018 gender-swapped version debuted in London. A version of that revival is rumored to be headed to Broadway.

Details: March 29- May 5; Altarena Playhouse, 1409 High St., Alameda; $27-$30; 510-523-1553, www.altarena.org.
